VARIOUS JOURNALS, SITES, AND GOOD READING

Elimae
Simple and sweet writing. Always a little strange and wonderful.

Spork
These Arizonans produce what is probably the most beautiful hand-printed, hand-bound literary journal going. The web site is nice too. I’m listed as their “editor-at-large.”

Juked
A regularly updated array of poems, fiction, non-fiction, and other sweet action.

Nerve
The premier site for high-minded smut. And they have a sense of humor.

Slouch
Portland based webzine. I sometimes watch sports with their editors.

Narrative
Good, strong work from a great web site that is also one of the best-paying venues out there...if you’re lucky.

Post Road
One of my favorite things about this mag is their “recommendations” section.

Web Del Sol
This site has tons of links to other literary web sites. A valuable resource.

Independent Publishing Resource Center
Portland's center for book design, zine making, workshops, and fine printing for everyone.

Failbetter
When you fear failure, you will fail.

Pindeldyboz
A good mix of various small press contempos. But real special-like.

The 2nd Hand
There is a man named Dils out there in Chicago. I think he may be a genius.

The Land-Grant College Review
This is a truly great journal born in 2003. The print journal is beautifully printed art & fiction.

Monkeybicycle
Fun, ambitious, stumbling down the highway.

Eyeshot
Lee Klein is a stud. Not just cuz he does this funny, unpredictable web site, but because he's a 76ers fan too.

Hobart
Trailer park lit? You won't need a mustache to enjoy the work here.

Word Riot
One of the best sites going. And they put out books too! Don't be player hating on these champs.

Identity Theory
Not only does this site have the most author interviews I've seen, but they also feature great fiction and essays.

Calamari Press/Sleepingfish
Sometimes surreal, always cool.

The Bat Segundo Show
Great interviews with authors in these podcasts.

Moby Lives
So informative I made it my home page. Moby Lives is the publishing industry's bullshit detector.

McSweeney's
The web site for the greatest and oddest literary magazine in the world.
So addictive it leaves a pang.

The Believer
A magazine published through McSweeney's. Superb, mindblowing, essays on books, authors, people, tools, children, etc...

Crack Press
Pete McCracken is the man behind one of the best letterpress and silkscreen printing businesses in the northwest. Check out his work at this fabulous site.

Smokebox
Smokebox is a superb web site full of criticisms, commentary, and fiction. Kurt Eisenlohr can sometimes be found here, spouting off about strippers or bands, or somesuch.

Trope 5
This is probably my favorite kind of writing. I'm not sure what it's called but writers here include: Ben Marcus, Diane Williams, Gary Lutz, Gordon Lish, some big names, some smaller. Strange & Dark & Experimental. One of the best from webdelsol.

NEWS AND CULTURE

Willamette Week

Portland’s more newsy weekly paper. Their site has a cool music section called Local Cut.

The Portland Mercury
The Portland smarty-pants weekly. A fun place to go to check out what's up in Portland.

The Onion
Alright, so they don't need any publicity from me, but this is some pretty
fucking funny stuff. Amazing spoofs of newspaper journalism. Columnist
Smoov B is a favorite at the Sampsell house.

ASAP
This is a newish web site run by Associated Press. If you type Sampsell into the search window, you’ll see all the Book Pusher columns.

Arizona Central
This may seem weird, but I really like this newspaper. They always have weird articles mixed in with the straight news.

Powell's Books
Powell's is the biggest bookstore in the world! If you're looking for hard-to-find or out-of-print stuff, here's the best place to start. Also has good interviews, a blog, and staff recommendations. Plus they're unionized.
